Home Inspector Licensing in Alaska

Eligibility Apply within 1 year of passing your exam(s)
Alaska does not require pre-licensing education or supervised inspections — applicants qualify by passing the appropriate exam and meeting eligibility criteria. You must submit a complete application within one year of your most recent passing exam date. Applicants must not have had a home inspection registration revoked in any state, must not be subject to an unresolved disciplinary or criminal complaint, and must not have been convicted of fraud, theft, or related crimes in the previous seven years.

National exam via PSI
NHIE (National Home Inspector Examination)
Existing Home applicants must pass the National Home Inspector Examination (NHIE), administered by PSI. New Construction applicants must pass four International Code Council exams: Residential Building Inspector, Residential Electrical Inspector, Residential Plumbing Inspector, and Residential Mechanical Inspector. Joint Registration applicants must pass all five exams. Each test is paid directly to its administering organization.

ASHI Standards & Ethics Examination
Submit your registration application with the $250 fee. Alaska renews on a two-year cycle for $150, with eight hours of continuing competency activity required during each licensing period.

Separately, every working inspector must hold an Alaska Business License, filed with the state's Division of Corporations.

E&O insurance, bond, or assets
Liability insurance plus a $10,000 surety bond
Carry general liability insurance at a minimum of $20,000 for property damage, $50,000 for injury or death to one person, and $100,000 for injury or death to more than one person. In addition, post a $10,000 surety bond before performing inspections. Coverage and bond must remain continuous for the life of your registration.
