Montana applicants must complete a minimum of 40 hours of comprehensive home inspection coursework approved by the Department of Labor and Industry, OR pass a department-approved national home inspection examination. The DLI maintains a list of approved pre-licensing courses on its website. No specific state exam is required.

Active membership in an approved national association
Maintain active membership in a national home inspection association approved by the DLI. Membership must be current at the time of application and continuously thereafter for license renewal. The DLI publishes its current Approved Associations list on the program website.

E&O insurance
$125,000 E&O minimum + workers' comp coverage
Carry errors and omissions insurance with a minimum of $125,000 in coverage. Working inspectors must also be covered under a workers' compensation policy or hold an Independent Contractor Exemption Certificate (ICEC). Coverage must be maintained continuously for the life of your license.

Application & Renewal $80 application + $80 anniversary renewal
Submit your initial license application with the $80 fee through the DLI's online portal. Licenses renew annually on your issuance anniversary, with a $80 renewal fee and a 60-day renewal window. Continuing education is not required.
