Oregon uses a points-based education system administered by the Construction Contractors Board. Applicants must earn 20 qualifying points before sitting for the exam. Points can be earned through CCB-approved coursework, accredited college coursework in construction or related fields, or documented professional experience. The 20-point threshold is approximately equivalent to 60 hours of formal classroom education.

Licensing Exam

Pass the National Home Inspector Examination
Oregon applicants must pass the National Home Inspector Examination (NHIE), a four-hour, 200-question test administered by the Examination Board of Professional Home Inspectors. The exam fee is $225 paid directly to the testing administrator. Required for all OR home inspector certifications since October 1, 2015.

Mandatory Business Affiliation Every certified inspector must be tied to a CCB-licensed business
Oregon requires every certified home inspector to be an owner or employee of a business that is independently licensed with the CCB. Solo practitioners must form their own LLC or corporation and obtain a CCB business license for that entity. This is unique to Oregon — no other state requires this dual licensing structure.

Insurance & Bond (via Business License) Bond and general liability through your CCB-licensed business
The CCB-licensed business must maintain a contractor surety bond between $10,000 and $20,000 (depending on business size and category) and general liability insurance with limits between $100,000 and $500,000. Coverage must be active continuously for the life of the business license; lapses can affect both the business license and the inspector's certification.

Application, Renewal & Continuing Education $150 application fee, two-year renewal cycle, 30 CE hours per cycle
Submit your Certified Home Inspector application through the CCB with the $150 non-refundable application fee. Certification renews every two years. CE requirement per renewal period is 30 hours, earned through CCB-approved providers in approved subject areas. CE may also include documented ride-alongs with other inspectors.
