Approved Certification

Hold a current certification from a DOPL-approved organization
Utah requires applicants to hold a current home inspector certification from one of the organizations approved by the Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL). The approved options are the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI), the International Code Council (ICC) Residential Combination Inspector certification, and the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors (InterNACHI). Certification must be active at the time of application and maintained continuously thereafter.

Licensing Exam Pass the National Home Inspector Examination
Utah requires applicants to pass the National Home Inspector Examination (NHIE), administered by the Examination Board of Professional Home Inspectors. The NHIE is computer-based at PSI test centers across Utah, with pass/fail results delivered the same day.

Liability & E&O Insurance $500,000 each on general liability and E&O — DOPL named as certificate holder
Carry both general liability insurance and errors and omissions (E&O) insurance with minimum coverage of $500,000 each. The Utah Division of Professional Licensing must be named as the certificate holder on both policies. Coverage must remain continuous for the life of your license.

Submit your application for the Private Home Inspector license through DOPL once you have your certification, NHIE pass, and insurance certificates. The application opened January 1, 2026. Specific fees and renewal cycles are administered by DOPL — verify current numbers directly with the Division at the time of application.
