Two-tier structure: Home Inspector Intern Permit & Home Inspector License

Connecticut applicants must first qualify for a Home Inspector Intern Permit. After completing one of two qualifying paths (1 year as Intern with 200 paid inspections, OR completing board-approved training plus 100 supervised inspections), they may apply for the full Home Inspector License. Both tiers are administered through the Department of Consumer Protection.

40 hours of board-approved training

Applicants must hold a high school diploma or equivalent. Complete a board-approved 40-hour training program covering all major residential systems and Connecticut-specific licensing requirements. The completed training is required to earn the Intern Permit.

Licensing Exam Pass the board-approved competency examination

Connecticut applicants must pass an oral, written, or electronic competency examination approved by the Home Inspection Licensing Board. Pass results must be submitted with the license application.

Liability & E&O Insurance

$250,000 liability and $50,000 E&O minimums

Carry liability insurance with at least $250,000 in coverage and errors and omissions (E&O) insurance with at least $50,000 in coverage. Coverage must be active before licensure and maintained continuously thereafter.

Application, Renewal & Continuing Education

$240 initial license, June 30 odd-year renewal, 20 CE hours per cycle

Submit your initial license application through the Department of Consumer Protection ($40 application fee + $200 license fee). All Connecticut home inspector licenses and intern permits expire on June 30 of each odd-numbered year. Renewal is $250 with 20 hours of continuing education required per two-year cycle.
